Isaiah Kennedy to Receive $20,000 Ridge Alumni Memorial Scholarship

On June 11, 2024 at Ridge High Awards Night, senior Isaiah Kennedy will receive the 2024 Ridge Alumni Memorial Scholarship (Ridge AMS), a $20,000 award that recognizes character and determination.

“Isaiah’s path has not been easy, and his story embodies the values underlying our scholarship – overcoming obstacles and finding a way to take positive steps towards a brighter future,” according to Alexandra Daggett, Chair of the Ridge Alumni Memorial Scholarship Board of Trustees.

In and out of foster care since he was a young child, at the age of 18, Isaiah will graduate from Ridge this year, having secured a job, applied to college and looking forward to what the future holds for him.

In his AMS application, Isaiah described his childhood and being removed from his mother’s care, “The memories I have of my childhood seem fuzzy and out of order but I do vividly remember when I went to live with my foster family…It was only four months, but it was the strongest and most stable four months of my life.”

When he turned 18, Isaiah was able to return to his foster family in Basking Ridge, saying, “My foster family helped me to find a job, to apply to college, to get a social security card and establish medical insurance. I have no idea what I would have done without them.”

Isaiah plans to use his award towards his college tuition and other related expenses.

The Ridge AMS grant recognizes applicants’ character, determination, and non-traditional achievements, rather than grades or test scores.  Winners may use the funds for any personal growth opportunity. The generosity of donors has allowed Ridge AMS to continue its mission for the past 17 years.

Ridge Cross Country

On a beautiful fall Saturday, at Holmdel Park, the Ridge Cross Country team finished its season competing against New Jersey’s best runners at the Meet of Champions.

The previous week at the Group 4 State Championship, also held at Holmdel Park, the boys team qualified as a 10th-place wild card team and sophomore Rachel Biondo qualified as an individual during the girl’s race.

At Groups, Brenden McMahon finished in 15:41 and placed 4th – missing 3rd place by .015 seconds- earning him the second-fastest time at Holmdel in Ridge history. Dev Patel had a 44-second course PR with a 16th place finish, and Rachel ran a 20:07, also a personal best at Holmdel.

Representing Ridge at the Meet of Champions were junior captain Brenden McMahon, who placed 10th, and senior captains Dmitri Cole, 55th, and Dev Patel, 72nd.

Also racing were seniors Matthew Fukushima, who returned from an injury and placed 126th, and Justin Breivogal, 143rd. Junior Kaleb Huang, 138th and Sophomore Max Neumann, who finished in 157th place, rounded out the top 7.

Brenden McMahon’s 10th-place finish makes him the 3rd runner in Ridge history to individually medal at the Meet of Champions. Ridge as a team placed 11th overall.

In the girl’s race, Rachel placed 78th out of 160, ending her impressive cross-country season as a sophomore.

Ridge Girls Tennis

The Ridge girls tennis team (Ranked #4 in NJ)  concluded the 2023-2024 season with a commendable 14-2 record, securing the Group 4 State championship with a 4-1 victory. The team, composed of five experienced players and four newcomers, played integral roles in their collective success. Sophomore Jordan Lee, the first singles player, stood out as a county finalist and NJSIAA States Singles semi-finalist. Despite a challenging county final against Pingry that concluded 5-7, 5-7, Lee showcased resilience with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory in the group 4 state final. Junior Isabel Su, in second singles, left her mark as a county finalist. Her performance against Pingry included a 6-1 win in the first set, a 1-6 loss in the second, and a hard-fought 4-6 score in the third set. Team captain and senior Kate Henderson led at third singles, securing a decisive state victory with scores of 6-3 and 6-2. Maya Ygelsias and Kirtana Hariharan, the first doubles pair, also had quite the exciting final for team states, clinching the first set 7-6 and sweeping the second 6-1. Senior Srija Inampudi and junior Sabrina Schwarz showcased their skills throughout the season, particularly in a commendable match against Bridgewater-Raritan with scores of 7-5, 6-3. Simone Bajaj and Iniya Dhurairaj, former JV captains and current varsity alternates, provided valuable depth to the roster. Under the guidance of varsity coach Chad Griffiths, honored as Coach of the Year on NJ.com, the Ridge girl's tennis team demonstrated resilience, skill, and teamwork, culminating in a successful championship season that will be remembered for their consistent performance and collaborative efforts on the court.

Ridge Forensics Club

The Ridge Forensics team is back in full force once again this school year, showing its local, regional and national competitors what it does best: find their voices and win. The Ridge Forensics Team is comprised of two parts: speech and debate. “Speech” competitors focus on Public Address (ie: original or replicated speeches) and Interpretation (ie: dramatic or humorous interpretation of content), while “Debate” competitors focus on different styles of formal arguments. The students practice upwards of three times a week with coaches from all across the country, some of whom are Ridge/WAMS Staff, Ridge alumni, working actors, former forensics champions and more. They also practice amongst themselves, with fellow teammates serving as not just friends and competitors, but as student coaches offering detailed feedback. Nearly every weekend, you can find RF students dressed in business professional attire, piling into buses at 7:30am and not often not returning until 6:30pm. They continue to show exceptional sportsmanship, professionalism and dedication week after week. Director David Yastremski is incredibly proud of their work and looks forward to 2024.

This season for the Girls Cross Country team was one of hard work and significant improvement. The girls began their season at Ocean Country, with many girls starting off with strong PRs. Elayna Douglas placed top 20 in the senior race. The girls then took to Holmdel park on an early Saturday morning for Shore Coaches. Rachel Biondo placed 6th in the girls Varsity B race, with Elayna Douglas also medaling. Jeanne Leduc ran the 2 mile freshman race and added to the collection of medals for the day!

The girls began the championship season at the Skyland Conference Championships, earning a third place finish in their division and finishing in the top six overall! The girls then competed on their home course at Pleasant Valley Park for the Somerset County Championships. The girls fought hard for a fourth place finish. Elayna Douglas, Ryan Ireland, Jane LaCapra, and Avanika Malhotra all ran overall PR’s!

The girls team traveled to Greystone Park once again for the North 2 Group 4 Sectional Championships. They placed third, which qualified them for the State Group Championships! Elayna Douglas had an overall PR  of 20:29 coming in at 13th, followed by Rachel Biondo in 14th, and Ryan Ireland in 15th!

Fall Into Choir Night

Fall Into Choir Night proved to be an absolute delight for all the kids who joined the A Cappella Choir for a night of music, laughter, and new friendships. These young stars hailed from our own elementary schools, including Mount Prospect, Liberty Corner, Oak Street, Cedar Hill, as well as William Annin, and they couldn't have had a better time. The evening featured eating pizza, spirited sing-alongs, and a chance to get a taste of life in the RHS choir program, making it an unforgettable experience.

What made the event truly special was the intergenerational bonding between the younger and more experienced high school singers. It was like a musical mentorship, and it fostered a sense of unity and community, highlighting the boundless joy that music can bring. The district's depth and commitment to community shine through when they embrace and support the next generation.

With fingers crossed, they hope this tradition continues to thrive and evolve, much like the ever-growing Bernards Township choir program. It's not just about the music; it's about building friendships, having fun, and instilling a lifelong love of singing. Here's to the future of the local choir program, where the magic of music brings the community together in beautiful harmony.
